A Clinical Study on the Level of Purpose in Life of the Admitted Alcoholic Patients

Abstract
The results were as follow:
1. On PIL test, the scores was the highest in the social drinkers, and the next was the alcoholic group, and last the wives of alcoholics. The level of the alcoholic group was significantly higher than that of their wives at the level of 5%, and was lower than that of social drinkers at the level of 1%.
2. The MMPI profile of the alcoholics was L-F-6-9-8type, and that of social drinkers was L-D-5-2-3 type.
3. On MMPI, the alcoholic group showed significantly higher scores than the social drinkers in K, Pa, Sc, and Ma subscales at the level of 1%, and in F and Pt subscales at the level of 5%.
4. The alcoholics and their wives showed similar trend in the level of purpose and meaning in life. Namely, the wives of alcoholics with higher PIL level also showed significantly higher scores than those of patients with lower PIL level of 5% on PIL test.
5. The MMPI profile of the alcoholic patients with higher PIL level was L-F-9-5-6 type, and that of patients with lower level was F-6-2 type. The lower PIL group showed significantly higher scores than the higher PIL group in D and Pd subscales at the level of 1%, and in Hy, Pa, and Pt subscales at the level of 5% on MMPI.
6. The lower PIL group showed significantly higher scores on AST and younger in the age of first alcohol drinking than the higher group at the level of 1%.
